BITTER BEANS

A drama/road movie

When the coffee farmers in a Mayan village choose young Conchita to end oppression, she travels through three continents to outwit the local henchman of the global dealers.

Conchita, an uninformed country girl, gradually turns herself into a clever negotiator. The tightly knitted relations in the village carry her through hardships. Even when she is miles away.

Torn between golden promises in the Mayan creation myth and harsh reality, young Conchita asks selfevident questions about the coffee dealer’s unscrupulous treatment of the farmers. That spurs the villagers to club their meager savings together and send her to town to get a commercial education. When the dealer cheats the farmers once more, they urge Conchita to confront him with the arguments she has learned. Her gifts have turned into a heavy burden.

Eager to comply she hops on board a freighter, carrying the new harvest. She has plunged into a task with immense demands. One thing leads to another.

Searching answers, she travels from Jacksonville to New York, Brussels and Copenhagen.

A quick learner, she soon sees through and utilizes people who pretend to help her but are merely helping themselves. Gradually she turns into a clever dealer.

Lorenza Manrique at IMCINE heard the story at the EFM and said:

I am sure this is a great and very significant story for Mexican and Latin American people and for all of us.

A FATAL CURE

A character driven drama

A loyal PR consultant rudely awakens to reality, when mysterious deaths confront her with BigPharm’s sociopath gate keeper, who fiercely protects the secret about the new happiness pills.

A story about a psychological warfare between the protagonist’s awakening conscience and unscrupulous manipulations to silence her. A switch-back ride from admired hub to stigmatized plague. But what can bend, does not break.

The PR department prepares a campaign for a new psychopharmaceutic drug, the company’s trump card. Ground-breaking! But a colleague takes one of the pills and is in the last minute rescued from a deep coma. What is wrong?

Her long-lost flame, now an approved scientist, has the answer: a forbidden opioid, kept secret.

A judge at Roadmap Writers wrote:

A strong female character that is extremely castable. The stakes are clear, and the suspense is very well structured. The script can be a low-budget production. It plunges straight into the current Opioid crisis. With the right actresses and actors, it could be a hit.
